Old houses moving
The Professors Lord House and the President Lord House have been moved from North College Street to sites farther up Lyme Road to make way for a graduate-student housing complex on the west side of North College.
Planning in spite of slowdown
The Downturn has slowed construction, but according to an update from Provost Scherr, but the College still is pursuing projects including the Academic Centers north of Carson Hall on North Main; Kemeny Hall on North Main, which requires moving Phi Tau; an addition to Sudikoff Hall; an addition to the south of Cummings Hall atop the existing road; and an addition to the Child Care center.
North Fairbanks demolition contemplated
Provost Scherr, quoted in an article in The Dartmouth, notes that the school expects to demolish North Fairbanks Hall eventually. The building was designed by Jens Frederick Larson in 1925 as a preparatory school gymnasium opposite Webster Avenue and was moved to its current site in 1963.
Construction on hold
President Wright’s budget letter: “We will place a hold on all construction and renovation projects not currently underway or otherwise obligated by contract or other instruments.”

Construction items in strategic plan
The school’s new strategic plan includes several building projects, The Dartmouth reports. Among them are a parking garage by Cummings (Summer 2003), the Maynard Street Dorm, and a dining hall nearby to seat 500-600.

Planning for north campus projects
Trustees are moving ahead on planning, The Dartmouth reports.:
- Construction on the Maynard Street dormitory is set to begin in less than eight months.
- Designs for Kemeny Hall have been presented, construction to begin fall 2003.
- Bradley and Gerry will be demolished.
- Phi Tau will be moved west (toward Main Street).
- A new parking garage at the Thayer School was approved.
Rauner Library receives award
Rauner Library (VSBA, 1998) will receive a 2002 AIA Honor Award according to a press release. (announcements from the AIA and Architectural Record.)
Projects contemplated
President Wright noted several facilities projects underway or contemplated in his Annual Report to the General Faculty:
- Thayer School addition
- Cancer Center at DMS/DHMC
- Residential and administrative space at the Tuck School
- Kemeny Hall (mathematics, on Shower Towers site)
- Academic Centers adjoining Kemeny (see above)
- Incremental space for Computer Sciences
- Arts facilities improvements (study under way by Rogers Marvel Architects)
- Life Sciences building (a “shared facility” that “bridges the Arts and Sciences and the Medical School”)
- Classroom renovations, ongoing
- Renovations to Alumni Gymnasium and Thayer Dining Hall
- Heating Plant capacity expansion
- New parking deck

Construction (including Carson Hall) presses forward, The Dartmouth reports.
Faculty housing on South Park
To little fanfare online, a frame housing complex opposite the gym at the southeast corner of Wheelock and Park has opened. The ensemble is arrayed around a central parking area/commons and features an arched corner gateway building.

Brudage Lodge demolished
After the old one was demolished, the new lodge is open at the Skiway, the Skiway site announces.
Land swap possible
In a major land swap, Dartmouth may acquire Hanover High School and its fields, which occupy a prime site adjacent the College’s athletic complex, The Dartmouth reports.
New sports facilities
New sports facilities stand behind Thompson Arena: Scully-Fahey Field, an artificial turf field with bleachers seating 1,500, and the Alexis Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion.
An addition to Pike House on North Main Street will serve Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
McLane Lodge
The Skiway has replaced the Brundage Lodge with the new McLane Lodge.

South Block rentals
The College is renting out the houses in town it purchased recently and will have William Rawn (architect of Grasse Road faculty housing) renovate some of them as President Wright mentions in The Dartmouth.
Lebanon Street building
The school and town are building a parking garage and commercial building on Lebanon Street behind the Hop, The Dartmouth reports.
Grasse Road
Dartmouth plans to add 45 faculty housing units to the 32 existing in its Grasse Road development, The Dartmouth reports.
Carpenter will be renovated soon.
